I had a full physical examination recently, and everything checked out fine except for one thing: according to my BMI (body mass index) I am overweight... obese... fat.
Above, you'll see a picture of my rotund, corpulent self, along with the doctor's report, where he expresses his concern that I should exercise more in order to control my waistline.
Now, it's been a few years since I've walked around with an incredibly low body fat percentage of 3.1%, but, wow... this is something else.
Let's define a few terms for the benefit of anyone who doesn't know what a BMI and BF% are.
First the easy one: Body fat percentage just means how much actual fat you have on your body.
Next, the one that confuses people: BMI stand for body mass index. It's just a measure of your weight divided by your height.

Next, the one that confuses people: BMI stand for body mass index. It's just a measure of your weight divided by your height.
Do the math and you'll get a number usually between 15 and 40. This is just a ratio of how much mass you have on average for every square centimeter of your body. The World Health Organization defines a BMI of 25 or above as overweight, and around 20 to be average/normal.
Now, listen carefully: a BMI has nothing to do with how healthy or fit you are. It has nothing to do with how fat you are. It's just a measure of how much you weigh relative to your height, that's it!
