I do a lot of personal fitness training, and a lot of private instruction in MMA, boxing, Muay Thai, kickboxing, jiu-jitsu, kettlebell training, and even dance classes (yep, I've actually got a degree in modern dance). And I don't want to undersell the importance of good one on one training. However, my group MMA classes are my absolute favorite part of my work day. It's there that you find the synergy of collective experience, where everyone in the group lifts everyone else up.
I've said it before: I've never met anyone who wasn't better than me at something. I can tell you about the attributes of each and every person in that picture that I wish I had. And isn't that the goal of a group? To take the positive attributes of each individual, examine them, harness them, and develop them, so that everyone can benefit from it? Yes, I think so.
One of my students asked me how I keep learning as a coach. There are lots of ways- I seek out other coaches, I read technique books, attend seminars, watch videos, cross train, keep in touch with my coaches back in the states, learn from watching fights, etc... but more than anything, my most significant learning takes place here, in the group class. This is the laboratory where we run trial after trial- this is the forge where we pass through the refiner's fire- this is the community where we make each other stronger. Thanks guys. Thanks for being part of the group MMA class.
